Podcast: What’s going on inside an €18,000 streaming DAC?

  • €18,000? For a streaming DAC? That only does Roon? That’s an über-reductive way to look at the MU2 ‘Music Player’ from Grimm Audio. The MU2 is also a line-level pre-amplifier with balanced analogue ins and outs. it has a CD-sized control wheel inset into its inwardly-curving top plate for volume control, play/pause and internal menu access; but the main reason for buying this Dutch unit is its sound quality. We’ll get into that in our video review (ETA early 2025) but I had questions that needed answers. So, I got MU2 designer Eelco Grimm on the horn to ask why the front-panel screen is so small. Could the text be made easier to read from the listening position? Why is the MU2 Roon only? How can a digital signal’s pre-processing impact the sound of the analogue output? Also: could the operating system’s resource hungriness impact sound quality? You can listen to the Grimm’s answers in the latest episode of the Darko.Audio podcast.
