French Future-Fi: Triangle Capella streaming speakers

  • Triangle has announced a new streaming active standmount loudspeaker called Capella. It’s a 2-way design in which a 16.5cm cellulose pulp membrane driver handles the bass/midrange and a 2.5cm horn-loaded magnesium alloy dome tweeter – augmented by a “perfectly-matched phase plug” – doles out the uppermost frequencies. Each driver enjoys 50 Watts of Class D amplifier driver with the crossover implemented using DSP. A reminder: the crossover landing before the amplification is the definition of an active loudspeaker (and not just a power cable stuck in the rear).

With each Capella speaker cabinet riding atop a metal frame, the port has been implemented to fire downwards for a manufacturer-rated bass reach of 42Hz (-3dB). Triangle’s ‘DVAS’ internal cabinet brace sits above the port to wedge the driver mount against the rear baffle, its circular and triangular cutouts permitting proper airflow. From the press release: “This ensures even distribution of low frequencies and allows easy placement of your speakers in your room.” ย However, the Capella’s framed undercarriage renders the S05 bespoke stands an essential purchase when not placing the Capella atop a sideboard or shelf.

The supplied Stereo Hub uses the WISA protocol to bridge each loudspeaker with streamed content and hard-wired feeds: the hub’s WISA transmitter talks to the WISA receiver in each speaker for 24bit/96kHz (and 2.6ms latent) wireless signal carriage.

On the back of the hub, we get connectors for HDMI ARC, 3 x TOSLINK, coaxial, USB-B, (digitised) analogue RCA and (digitised) analogue 3.5mm. Inside the hub lives support for Bluetooth, Google Chromecast, Airplay, Spotify Connect and Roon Ready with Triangle’s accompanying app integrating Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer and basic room correction for which Android users will need to borrow an iPhone or pony up for the wireless Zen Microphone (sold separately).

Those spotting the similarities to Buchardt’s A500 should note how the Triangle speakers don’t offer the A500’s Master Tunings, XLR inputs or their close-to-20Hz bass mining. What the French offer from their design is a more outwardly ostentatious aesthetic for considerably fewer dollars. A pair of Capella + Stereo Hub will sell for โ‚ฌ2500 or US$2799. Your choice of four finishes: Black Star, Astral Blue, Space White or Brown Nebula. The matching S05 stands go for โ‚ฌ299/pair or US$329/pair.
